Richard Rooley, FREng, Fellow ASHRAE, is principal of Rooley Consultants in Stoke Poges, Bucks, England. He is the first person from outside the United States and Canada to be elected president. As ASHRAE's president, Mr. Rooley directs the Society's Board of Directors and oversees the Executive Committee. He served on the Board of Directors and the Board Executive Committee as president-elect in 2002-03, treasurer in 2001-02, vice president in 1999-01 and 1997-98 and director-at-large in 1980-83. Mr. Rooley's past service is extensive. He has chaired numerous councils and committees, most notably Regions Council, the Finance Committee, the Planning Committee, Publishing Council and Education Council. He has been a member of the Membership Promotion Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Presidential Ad Hoc Centennial Committee, the Long Range Planning Committee, the Nominating Committee and the International Activities Committee. Mr. Rooley is a recipient of the ASHRAE International Activities Award, the Distinguished Service Award and an Award of Merit. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has authored or co-authored four books, more than 30 papers and some 70 articles. Mr. Rooley was awarded a BAI in civil engineering from Trinity College Dublin and is a chartered engineer through the Institutions of Civil Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. He is a Lay Reader in the Church of England. With his wife of over 30 years, Ruth, he has a son and daughter, both in the construction profession.
