The Community of ASHRAE: Challenges to Members

Richard H. Rooley, FREng, ASHRAE President 2003-04

  1. Councils, committees and chapters, within one year, to identify with and take ownership of the redefined structure within an ongoing change process.

  2. Technical committees and the technical 'hard wing' to cooperate in developing a matrix planning and management structure to achieve effective and efficient work so that our research effort is better targeted to achieve objectives.

  3. ASHRAE to make greater use of performance standards in parallel with prescriptive standards.

  4. ASHRAE to develop a standard writing process that allows full and fair comment, but with a target of this occurring only once during the process, and to shorten the process of developing standards from five years to two years.

  5. Society to develop relationships with other construction related organizations worldwide to further enhance ASHRAE's prestige.

  6. Chapters and Associate Societies to develop relationships with other organizations, holding joint meetings and sharing common memberships to improve the quality of buildings and to enhance the community of the construction industry in all its facets.

  7. ASHRAE to develop programs and cooperate with outside bodies to develop programs in all the "soft" aspects of ASHRAE members activities.

  8. ASHRAE to examine in each group that which makes the community of ASHRAE strong, both technical and social, and build upon this strength.

  9. Chapters to retain members during a career break.

  10. To understand this Englishman’s strategy and apply it worldwide.
